Parish Church of Our Lady of Help

The Parish Church of Our Lady of Help stands on Ilha do Governador displaying classic colonial architecture from the 18th century. The building features a single entrance, two choir windows, a triangular pediment, and a side bell tower.

A small chapel was founded here in the early 18th century and became a parish church in 1710. The building underwent several reconstructions, including a major rebuilding in 1743 and repairs following a fire in the 19th century.

The church has served for generations as the center of community life, hosting religious celebrations, weddings, and gatherings for residents of the island. It embodies Catholic traditions that arrived with Portuguese settlement and continue to shape the identity of this neighborhood today.

The church is located at Praca Calcuta 23 in the Freguesia neighborhood and serves as a key landmark in this part of the island. Visitors can attend regular services or simply view the exterior facade and explore the surrounding area.
