Itumbiara is a municipal center in southern Goiás that sits along the state border with Minas Gerais. The town lies beside a large reservoir created by a hydroelectric dam on the Rio Paranaíba.
A tax post was established here in 1824 to monitor travelers between Uberaba and the Caminho de Anhanguera. The hydroelectric plant built in the 1960s changed the landscape and has shaped the local economy since then.
