Itumbiara Dam

The Itumbiara Dam spans the Paranaíba River and creates a large reservoir that stretches across hundreds of square kilometers. The structure harnesses water flow to generate electricity for much of Brazil's power supply.

The project began in 1974 and was constructed mainly by Brazilian workers using materials sourced within the country. This period marked a turning point in how the region developed its infrastructure.

The dam attracted people to the region and transformed how nearby communities lived and worked. Places like this shape daily life in Goiás through their role in providing employment and resources.

The dam is located in an accessible area where visitors can view the structure and reservoir from observation points along the shoreline. The best time to visit is during the rainy season when water levels are higher.

The facility switched to remote control operation in 1997, with a central control room hundreds of kilometers away monitoring power generation. This system allows the dam to be managed more efficiently with fewer staff stationed on-site.
