Caramuru Viaduct, Neoclassical viaduct in Cidade Alta, Vitoria, Brazil
The Caramuru Viaduct is a neoclassical structure in the old part of Vitoria that connects Rua Dom Fernando and Rua Francisco Araújo across Rua Caramuru below. Stretching 34 meters, it skillfully bridges the steep elevation changes of the hillside setting.
The viaduct was built in 1925 during Florentino Avidos' administration, when the city was expanding and modernizing its infrastructure. This construction period helped connect Vitoria's different elevation levels more effectively.
The name comes from the Caramurus, members of a religious brotherhood who gathered at the nearby Franciscan convent. This connection to local spiritual life remains part of how residents understand and remember this site.
The structure is an integral part of the city center, connecting different areas of the old quarter at various elevations. You can easily walk across it while observing the street life below.
Although originally planned to include a tram system, this never came to pass for the structure. The steep slope and lack of adequate curve radius made a functioning rail system unfeasible.
