Maria Ortiz's Staircase is a granite structure in Vitoria's center that spans the elevation difference between the lower and upper city levels with broad steps and decorative metal railings. Lighting fixtures integrated along the route guide people through the passage at night.

The staircase took its current form in 1924 when engineer Henrique Novaes redesigned it as part of Vitoria's urban modernization. This transformation represented a shift from colonial-era construction methods to contemporary urban planning approaches.

On 25 February 2020 a car drove into the staircase at night; the driver had mistaken it for a street. People who were there helped him get the vehicle out without a tow truck, and no one was hurt.
