Serra do Conduru State Park, State nature reserve near Ilhéus, Brazil
Serra do Conduru State Park is a nature reserve spanning approximately 9,275 hectares of Atlantic Forest across three municipalities. Dense rainforest dominates the landscape, with trees reaching 40 meters in height.
The park was established in 1997 as environmental compensation for constructing Highway BA-001, which connects Ilhéus to Itacaré. This decision came from efforts to offset forest loss caused by the road's development.
The park takes its name from the conduru tree, which produces valuable red wood and has been central to regional forestry practices for generations. This connection to timber traditions shapes how local communities relate to this forest.
The reserve is open daily, and visitors should expect wet terrain and dense vegetation throughout. Sturdy footwear and protective clothing are advisable, and overnight stays require advance planning.
Research has found that more than 450 tree species grow within a single hectare, making this one of the most biodiverse forests on Earth. This remarkable concentration reveals the complexity of rainforest ecosystems.
