Established in the early 18th century, Itaporanga d'Ajuda developed from a Portuguese colonial settlement centered around agriculture and livestock farming in northeastern Brazil.

The name originates from Tupi language, combining 'ita' meaning stone and 'poranga' meaning beautiful, while d'Ajuda refers to Nossa Senhora da Ajuda.

Itaporanga d'Ajuda maintains a population of 34,709 residents and operates in the UTC-3 time zone, with its administrative center at Praça Getúlio Vargas.

The Chapel of the Colégio Sugar Plantation within Itaporanga d'Ajuda stands as the first documented Jesuit settlement location in Portuguese Brazil.
