Palmares is a municipality in Pernambuco state in northeastern Brazil. The territory spans roughly 339 square kilometers and sits about 120 kilometers west of Recife, the state capital.
The municipality was officially founded on June 9, 1879, emerging from a region once known for its dense palm forests. The name reflects the vegetation that originally defined this landscape.
