Caruaru

Caruaru sits inland in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, forming a larger city with multiple neighborhoods and surrounding districts. The built environment spreads across hilly terrain, with streets running from the center in different directions and connecting residential areas with markets, churches, and public squares.

The settlement emerged in the early 19th century when chapel construction and land donations led to the founding of a permanent place. Through the economic importance of markets and trade, the settlement grew rapidly and was later elevated to city status.

The Festival de São João takes place throughout June, filling the streets with traditional music, regional food, and folkloric performances.

Visitors should bring comfortable shoes for walking through street markets and extended exploration of the city. The hot months call for sun protection and plenty of water, while June tends to draw larger crowds arriving for festival activities.

The local weekly market ranks among the most extensive open-air trading spaces in the country, offering handcrafted ceramics, textiles, and typical regional foods. Many visitors notice the variety of artisan work available here, drawing themes from rural daily life.
