Toritama, Textile manufacturing hub in Pernambuco, Brazil
Toritama is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, located along the Capibaribe River. The heart of the town is the Parque das Feiras, a large marketplace with thousands of stalls dedicated to textiles and clothing retail.
The place grew from a cattle ranch on the left bank of the Capibaribe River. It received official recognition as a municipality on December 29, 1953.
The name comes from indigenous words: "tori" means stone and "tama" means region. This naming reflects the geographical character of the place and shows its roots in indigenous language.
The main area is easy to navigate, with most shops and stalls concentrated around the marketplace district. The best time to explore is early morning when it is less crowded and easier to move between the stalls.
About one-sixth of all jeans made in Brazil come from here, making it the country's top denim production center. This specialization means almost every shop focuses on jeans and related cotton products.
