Our Lady of the Presentation Cathedral, Natal

Our Lady of the Presentation Cathedral is a religious building in Cidade Alta with white stone walls and baroque architecture that overlooks Praça André de Albuquerque. The structure features a prominent central tower that shapes the appearance of Natal's skyline.

Construction of this place of worship began in 1599, making it the first church founded in Rio Grande do Norte state. In 1633 the site experienced a period of severe hardship during a foreign invasion when many believers lost their lives.

The cathedral remains a living place of worship where Catholics have gathered for centuries to honor Nossa Senhora do Rosário and their faith. Visitors can observe how the space continues to hold meaning for the local community through its daily religious life.

Visitors should note that this building is located in the upper city area and is best reached on foot or by local transport. The best time to visit is outside of religious services, when there is more freedom to explore.

In 1753 fishermen discovered a statue of Nossa Senhora do Rosário in the river, which became connected to this place. That chance discovery later became the focus of local devotion and a symbol for the city.
