Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Contemporary art museum at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, South Africa.
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is an art museum at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town and occupies a converted grain silo with 42 concrete tubes serving as exhibition spaces. The nine floors house galleries and a central atrium that cuts through the former storage cylinders and opens the entire vertical space.
The grain silo was built between 1921 and 1924 for storing grain at the port. From 2014 architect Thomas Heatherwick transformed the abandoned industrial building into a museum space for contemporary African art.
Works by African creators such as Frances Goodman or Mary Sibande appear across several floors, showing paintings, sculptures and installations from many different viewpoints. The outdoor sculpture garden offers space for three-dimensional pieces and projects in conversation with the urban setting.
The building opens every day from 10 AM to 6 PM and offers around 6,000 square meters (about 64,500 square feet) of space for exhibitions, events and temporary projects. A restaurant and museum shop are also located in the building and complement the visit with food and souvenirs.
The central atrium was carved out of the massive concrete tubes and allows daylight to fall through glazed ceiling openings down to the lower floors. The geometric patterns of the interior walls recall the original function of the silo and create a sculptural architecture throughout the building.
