Genadendal Residence, Presidential official residence in Rondebosch, South Africa.
Genadendal Residence is the official presidential residence in Rondebosch, combining Georgian and Victorian architectural elements throughout its structure. The building features white walls, large windows, and ornate decorative details on both its facade and interior spaces.
The building began as a grain barn in the early 18th century and was converted into a residence in the mid-1800s. Its name changed from Westbrooke to Genadendal in 1995.
The rooms display a collection of South African artworks from different periods, reflecting the country's artistic development. These pieces offer visitors insight into how national art has evolved over time.
The residence includes a formal dining room seating about 70 guests, along with spaces for administrative work and security staff. These facilities support both large official events and daily operations of a presidential residence.
Nelson Mandela chose this building as his preferred residence in 1994, selecting it over the main Groote Schuur manor house on the same grounds. This decision reflected a personal preference for the smaller, more intimate setting.
