Soom Shale

Soom Shale is a geological formation in Western Cape composed of dark, fine-grained mudstone layers that accumulated on an ancient seafloor. The rock beds are organized in distinct sections that visitors can examine to understand how this marine environment developed over time.

The formation developed about 444 million years ago during a time of widespread glaciation and shifting ocean conditions. This period coincided with one of Earth's major mass extinction events that reshaped marine life.

Research teams from international institutions regularly conduct field studies at the Soom Shale site, enhancing geological knowledge through collaborative scientific projects.
