Bloukrans Bridge, Concrete arch bridge along Garden Route, South Africa
Bloukrans Bridge is a concrete arch bridge along the Garden Route in South Africa. It spans 451 meters across a deep valley and rises 216 meters above the river, while the central arch reaches 272 meters.
Designed by Liebenberg and Stander (Bergstan SA) and built by Concor between February 1980 and June 1983, the bridge was erected by free cantilever construction from both sides without falsework, the arch sections held by temporary towers. It carries the N2 across the Bloukrans River, which forms the border between the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
The Bloukrans River below the bridge marks the boundary between the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. Since 1997 Face Adrenalin has run the Bloukrans Bridge Bungy from a platform beneath the roadway on the concrete arch, 216 m above the river, drawing jumpers to the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route.
The bridge carries National Route 2 and features a platform for commercial bungee jumping operated by Face Adrenalin. Visitors who just want to look can walk out on the footpath to the center and peer down through the railings.
The site holds the record for the highest commercial bridge-based bungee platform in the world at 216 meters above the river. Jumpers reach speeds of around 200 kilometers per hour (about 125 miles per hour) during freefall.
