Ts'ehlanyane National Park, National park in Lesotho

Ts'ehlanyane National Park is a protected area in the Maluti Mountains of northern Lesotho, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital Maseru. The terrain is high-altitude, with steep slopes, rocky outcrops, and dense native forest through which the Ts'ehlanyane River runs.

The land within the park has long been part of Basotho mountain territory and local oral traditions connect the area to ceremonies and community gatherings. When it was formally protected, the main goal was to safeguard the native forest, which had become rare across the region.

The park's name comes from the Ts'ehlanyane River, which runs through it. Along the trails and near the entrance roads, visitors pass through stone-walled villages where local people still follow traditional ways of life.

Access is along a gravel road from the A1 highway, and a vehicle with good clearance is recommended since the road can be rough in places. The park's main lodge offers chalets and a restaurant, but it fills up on weekends and during school holidays, so booking ahead is worth it.

The park shelters the Chi-chi tree, a gnarled native species that is hard to find anywhere else in the region. Berg bamboo also grows here and serves as the host plant for an endangered butterfly species.
