North-West University Botanical Garden, Botanical garden at North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa
The North-West University Botanical Garden is a green space housing around 1500 plant species spread across areas for vegetables, herbs, native flora, and plant evolution. The grounds stretch along the Mooi River across several hectares.
It was founded in 1962 to provide plant materials for botany practical classes at Potchefstroom University. This original teaching purpose established it as a valuable resource for academic training.
The garden serves as a place where visitors encounter South African plants and learn how they matter to the region. Signs throughout explain each plant and its connection to the local environment.
Visitors can enter the grounds through the gate at the corner of Gerrit Dekker and Steve Biko Avenue, with daily hours stretching from early morning to late afternoon. It helps to wear comfortable shoes since you walk between the different plant areas.
The grounds feature two greenhouses housing tropical and succulent plants, allowing visitors to see species that would not thrive outdoors in the local climate. Additionally, a man-made rocky ridge attracts native birds and other local wildlife.
