Klerksdorp, Mining town in North West Province, South Africa
Klerksdorp sits along the Schoonspruit River and combines residential neighborhoods, mining operations, and farmland west of Johannesburg. The town includes several suburbs such as Jouberton and Alabama, all linked by a network of roads.
Twelve Voortrekker families founded the settlement in 1837 as the first European establishment north of the Vaal River in Transvaal. The discovery of gold deposits later transformed the farming community into a major mining center.
The name honors the founding Clerk family, whose descendants shaped early settlement patterns along the river valley. This town is also known as the birthplace of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a key voice in South Africa's struggle against apartheid.
Roads connect more than 30 suburbs and lead to main routes toward Johannesburg and other larger cities. Visitors should note that distances within this sprawling town are often longer than they appear on maps.
Beyond gold mining, the town operates large grain processing plants, making it one of few places to handle both mineral and agricultural products at scale. This dual economy shapes the skyline with mine shafts and silos standing side by side.
