Monumento aos Mortos da Primeira Guerra Mundial, World War I memorial at Praça dos Trabalhadores, Mozambique.
The Monumento aos Mortos da Primeira Guerra Mundial is a memorial in Maputo that stands beside the central train station at Praça dos Trabalhadores. A tall obelisk with a female figure at the top reaches approximately 14 meters high, and four massive stone relief panels depict scenes of soldiers engaged in conflict.
The memorial was designed in 1935 by Portuguese sculptor Ruy Roque Gameiro and architect António Reis Camelo, dedicated on a date honoring the war's end. The project reflected Portugal's effort to make its military legacy visible in the colony.
The four relief panels at the base show soldiers from Portugal and Africa who served together, capturing moments of shared service and duty. These images reflect how the conflict connected people from different regions under one cause.
The memorial sits on a central plaza beside the train station and is easily reached on foot when exploring the KaMpfumo district. The best view of the relief details comes from moving around the plaza, where you can see the full structure from different angles.
The top features a female figure called Pátria holding the Portuguese coat of arms with shield and sword, a powerful symbol of national identity. This recognizable statue became a landmark for a square that remains central to Maputo's layout.
