Mukurob, Natural sandstone formation in Hardap Region, Namibia.

Mukurob was a towering sandstone formation standing on the Weissrand Plateau with a distinctive narrow base supporting a broader top section. The structure rose roughly 12 meters high and stood out as a prominent natural landmark in the flat desert landscape.

The sandstone formation had stood for more than 50,000 years on the plateau before it collapsed suddenly in 1988. This collapse occurred during a period of major political transformation in Namibia and ended the existence of one of the region's defining landmarks.

The rock held deep meaning for the Nama people, who saw it as a sign of their lasting connection to this territory and believed their control over the land depended on its presence.

The site is located on a flat plateau in the Hardap Region and can be reached by vehicle, though the area is quite remote. Visitors should bring water and supplies, as services and facilities in this part of the region are limited.

The exact cause of the collapse remains mysterious, as scientists considered both a severe rainstorm and seismic activity from thousands of kilometers away as possible factors. This combination of environmental influences made the event a remarkable geological occurrence that still puzzles researchers today.
