Grande Anse, Réunion, protected bay in Petite-Île, Réunion (French overseas department)
Grande Anse is a protected bay on the south side of Reunion Island featuring coral sand and coconut palms lining the shore. A natural rocky pool at the southern end offers a calm swimming area, while the rest of the bay opens to stronger waves.
The region holds stories from the colonial pirate era, with legends of a famous pirate named La Buse burying treasure somewhere nearby. Today it is established as a protected area to preserve its natural landscape.
The name Grande Anse comes from French meaning Large Bay. Visitors can watch local families gather on weekends to picnic under coconut trees and enjoy traditional curry meals in the shade.
A rocky pool provides safe swimming while open water is dangerous due to strong currents and sharks. The parking area has snack bars, toilets, and showers, with a simple hiking trail to Piton Grande Anse offering views of the bay.
From May to September, visitors can spot whales migrating along the coast from the shore. This migration season offers a rare chance to see these large marine mammals in their natural environment.
