Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, International airport in Plaine Magnien, Mauritius.
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is the main air gateway in Plaine Magnien, Mauritius, featuring a two-level terminal with five boarding gates. The facility can handle up to four million travelers each year and covers a building area of around 57,000 square meters.
The facility opened in 1942 as a Royal Naval Air Station during World War II and later served as a Royal Air Force base. After military use ended, it transitioned into civilian hands and developed into the island's central air link.
The roof design echoes the shape of large palms, reminding travelers of the tropical island landscape as soon as they arrive. The building serves as a first signal of Mauritian identity, combining modern travel infrastructure with a greeting from the local plant world.
From Port Louis, the terminal lies around 50 kilometers away; parking for 600 vehicles and several car rental desks are available on site. The two-level hall allows easy orientation between arrival and departure areas.
The terminal uses solar panels for electricity generation and features systems for rainwater recovery, both making operations more sustainable. These technical solutions are not yet widespread in the Indian Ocean region.
