Julius Nyerere International Airport, International airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Julius Nyerere International Airport is an international airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with three terminals for domestic and international connections. The facility covers a large area northwest of the city and links East Africa with routes to Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
The airport opened in 1954 as a small facility for colonial connections and grew rapidly into the main gateway of the country after independence. The renaming honored the founding statesman who led Tanzania into self-governance.
The name honors the first president of the country, widely respected as the father of the nation after independence. Travelers experience here the gateway to safaris and coastal destinations that have made Tanzania internationally known.
Terminal 3 handles most international traffic, while Terminal 2 serves domestic flights. Renovation work may occasionally cause diversions and changed procedures, so arriving early before departure is advisable.
The airport serves as a hub for two major airlines of the country and connects regional smaller airfields with international destinations. Over two million passengers passed through the terminals in 2022.
