Ol Donyo Sabuk is a protected area in Central Province, Kenya, centered around a mountain covered in dense forest where large buffalo herds roam. The park is home to roughly 45 bird species and features trails that wind through the landscape.
Lord William Northrop McMillan arrived as an early European settler starting in 1872 and shaped the region for many decades. His grave near the summit remains a mark of this colonial period.
The Kikuyu people call this Ol Donyo Sabuk, meaning Buffalo Mountain, while the Maasai know it as Big Mountain. Both names show how important this place is to the communities living nearby.
The journey from Nairobi takes roughly one hour by vehicle and is possible year-round. The best months for spotting wildlife are June through September and January through February.
A single hiking trail passes by the 14 Falls of River Athi, providing a refreshing contrast to the surrounding dry landscape. On clear days, visitors can spot the distant peaks of Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro from higher points.
