Moi International Sports Centre, Multi-purpose sports stadium in Kasarani, Kenya
The Moi International Sports Centre is a multi-purpose sports complex in the Kasarani district of Nairobi, Kenya, with a main stadium, running track, Olympic swimming pool and indoor arena spread across a large site. The facility also includes several training pitches, residential buildings for athletes and technical installations that make the complex a self-contained sports city.
The complex was built in 1987 with Chinese funding and was intended to host the All-Africa Games after President Moi requested international support. Since then the facility has been renovated and expanded several times to meet modern requirements for international competitions.
The complex takes its name from Daniel arap Moi, the country's second president, who shaped the venue as a meeting point for top African athletes and local sports fans. Today the site regularly draws crowds from across East Africa who come to cheer on teams from the region.
The complex lies in Kasarani, north of central Nairobi, and is easily reached via Thika Road. On days with major events visitors should arrive early as the surrounding area can become very busy and parking spaces limited.
The altitude of the site has made it a popular training location for long-distance runners from around the world who want to prepare for high-altitude competitions. The Aquatic Centre was designed to meet international requirements even for major championships.
