Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Nairobi, Hindu temple in Nairobi, Kenya
The temple features intricate carvings made from 350 tonnes of yellow sandstone from Jesalmer, with interior decorations crafted from East African timber.
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir opened on August 29, 1999, becoming the first traditional stone and marble Hindu temple constructed on the African continent.
The temple maintains regular prayer meetings, festivals, and religious celebrations that connect the Hindu community of Nairobi through shared traditions and beliefs.
Visitors can access the temple daily from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with guided tours available for groups and schools.
The temple received The Architectural Association of Kenya's Millennium Award for Excellence in Architecture in June 2000 for its traditional design and construction.
