Nairobi National Museum, National museum in Museum Hill district, Nairobi, Kenya.
Nairobi National Museum is a collection facility on Museum Hill presenting galleries dedicated to natural history, ethnography, paleontology, and contemporary art. The spaces display fossils, human evolution, traditional crafts, and modern artworks in separate areas throughout the building.
The facility was established as an organization in 1910 and opened its doors in 1930 under the name Coryndon Museum. After Kenya gained independence, it was renamed in 1964 to become the National Museum and has served as the official national institution since then.
The name honors Kenya's heritage. Visitors see handcrafted objects, artworks, and artifacts from different regions that show how diverse local communities were and are.
The site sits near Uhuru Highway, positioned between the business district and other parts of the city. Visitors should allow time for the various galleries and the attached snake park with garden areas.
The institution houses research facilities and archives where scientists study East African nature and wildlife. This work makes it a center for understanding the region beyond what visitors see on the surface.
