Lamu County

Lamu County is an administrative region in southeastern Kenya spanning approximately 6,000 square kilometers with around 65 islands along the Indian Ocean. The coastline stretches about 130 kilometers and defines the landscape of this sparsely populated area.

The region became an important trading hub during the Swahili period from the 14th century onward, when the capital Lamu Town established itself as a major commercial port. This early significance shaped the area's economic role for generations to come.

Several communities—Aweer, Oromo, Somali, Swahili, and Arab—call this region home and maintain distinct traditions visible in daily life. You can see their influence in local food, dress, and the way people gather in public spaces throughout the area.

Getting around within the region depends heavily on water vessels and flights, as the island-based geography limits other options. Visitors should expect longer travel times and plan flexibly when exploring multiple locations.

The area is one of Kenya's most sparsely populated regions and shelters several traditional island settlements that have preserved their independent ways of life. This isolated location has allowed local practices and customs to remain relatively unchanged by outside influences.
