Lamu County

Lamu County extends across 6,273 square kilometers of land, encompassing 65 islands along the Indian Ocean and 130 kilometers of coastline.

The county emerged as a significant trade center during the Swahili period, with its capital Lamu Town establishing itself as a commercial port in the 14th century.

The region supports multiple communities, including Aweer, Oromo, Somalis, Swahilis, Arabs, and Kikuyu populations, each contributing to the local traditions.

Transportation within the county relies primarily on water vessels and air travel, with the LAPSSET project developing new infrastructure connections.

The county maintains 203 early childhood centers, 139 primary schools, and 25 secondary schools, serving the smallest population of any Kenyan county.
