Victoria Clock Tower, Clock tower in Victoria, Seychelles
The Victoria Clock Tower is a silver-colored structure standing at the intersection of four major streets in the city center. The tower was constructed from nine cast iron pieces that form this distinctive vertical landmark in the heart of Victoria.
The structure was built in 1903 to commemorate Queen Victoria, though two of the nine cast iron components were lost during their transport to the island. This loss became part of the tower's own history and character.
Locals call it "Lorloz" and use it as a daily reference point to navigate the city center. The tower serves as a natural gathering spot where people meet and orient themselves in the capital.
The tower is located at a central crossroads and is easily accessible on foot. Visit during daylight hours to see the details clearly and enjoy the activity of the surrounding streets.
The clock mechanism was upgraded in 1999 from a spring-driven system to electronic controls, allowing the chimes to ring for the first time in its history. This modernization gave the historic tower a new voice in the city center.
