Victoria

Victoria is the capital of Seychelles on Mahé Island, set in a shallow bay surrounded by forested hills. The streets in the center run parallel to the waterfront, while residential areas spread up the gentle slopes behind.

French colonists founded the settlement in 1778 under the name L'Établissement before the British renamed it in 1841. The harbor developed during the 19th century into an important stop for ships crossing the western Indian Ocean.

The market quarter fills with vendors each morning, selling fresh fish, tropical fruit, and spices while locals complete their daily shopping. Conversations switch between Creole, French, and English, shaping everyday life in this multilingual community.

Most routes through the center are short enough to walk, while the streets climbing the hillsides become steeper. Local buses run regularly along the main routes, carrying passengers to other parts of the island.

A clock tower modeled after London's Little Ben stands in the center, recalling the period of British administration. The tower was installed in 1903 and now serves as a popular meeting point for visitors.
