Frégate Island, Private island in Seychelles, Indian Ocean

Frégate Island is a private tropical island in Seychelles, lying in the Indian Ocean with granite formations and forested slopes. The terrain includes Mount Signal rising from the center, surrounded by beaches, coastal vegetation, and protected natural areas across its two-square-kilometer expanse.

The island was named in the 18th century by explorer Lazare Picault after the frigatebirds that nested there in large numbers. Since then, it has evolved into a private destination while maintaining its focus on preserving the natural wildlife that inspired its name.

The island has long been shaped by its role as a sanctuary for wildlife, with frigatebirds giving it its name and remaining central to its identity. Today, visitors notice how the landscape is organized around protecting these animals and others that depend on the island.

Getting to the island requires arranging a private helicopter or boat transfer, as it has no scheduled public transport. Once there, you move around on foot, by bicycle, or in small vehicles on established paths.

The island harbors thousands of giant Aldabra tortoises that roam freely across the terrain, creating unexpected encounters during a walk. It also serves as a nesting site for endangered sea turtles, making wildlife encounters a regular part of any visit.
