Royal George Hotel, Albany, Heritage hotel in Albany, Australia
The Royal George Hotel is a three-story Victorian building with an asymmetrical facade located at the intersection of York and Grey Streets. The structure displays classical features with stonework and detailed window arrangements that shape the character of the streetscape.
The building was constructed in 1885 during Western Australia's gold rush and was initially named the Railway Hotel before being renamed in 1892. The name change coincided with a wave of growth that swept through the city during this period of economic expansion.
The hotel served as a gathering place for the community from its earliest days and hosted significant local meetings in its rooms. The spaces still reflect how travelers and business people came together and spent their time in the city.
The building sits at a central intersection in the city, making it easy to access and visible from the main street. The location is walkable and provides good views of the Victorian architectural style from multiple angles.
Behind the hotel once stood the Cremorne Gardens featuring an outdoor cinema and roller skating rink that were later demolished. These recreational facilities showed how the hotel served as a center of entertainment and leisure for the community at that time.
