Adityawarman Museum, History museum in Padang, Indonesia
The Adityawarman Museum is a history museum in Padang that displays ethnographic collections within a traditional Minangkabau building. Two rice granaries stand in the front yard, and the exhibits showcase the cultural diversity of West Sumatra.
The museum was founded in 1974 and opened in 1977 by the Ministry of Education and Culture to preserve West Sumatra's historical artifacts. Its creation was part of a broader effort to centralize regional collections and make them publicly accessible.
The museum houses collections documenting Minangkabau and Mentawai traditions through everyday objects and craftsmanship. These items reflect how local communities have lived and worked across generations.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday during daytime hours and comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the exhibits. Visitors with mobility concerns should check accessibility ahead of time, as some areas of the grounds may be uneven.
The museum suffered significant damage in an earthquake and lost a large portion of its original collection. Despite these losses, the remaining pieces are today complemented by new acquisitions and reconstructions.
