Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Canduang, Islamic educational institution in Canduang Koto Laweh, Indonesia.
Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Canduang is an Islamic school located in the village of Canduang Koto Laweh, in the West Sumatra province of Indonesia. The campus is made up of several buildings that bring together religious study and general academic subjects within a single connected property.
The school was founded in 1928 by Syekh Sulaiman ar-Rasuli, who transformed a traditional prayer house into a structured place of learning. Over time, it grew into one of the main centers of Islamic education in the Minangkabau region.
The school follows the Syafi'i school of Islamic law and weaves local Minangkabau customs into daily teaching. Walking through the grounds, you can see students moving between prayer spaces and classrooms, which gives a clear sense of how religious and academic life are intertwined here.
The campus is an active school, so a visit outside of class hours gives you more freedom to walk around the buildings and grounds. Wearing modest clothing is advisable, as the school is part of a practicing Muslim community.
One section of the campus is dedicated to studying classical Islamic manuscripts, which is rare for a school in a rural setting. This draws students with a particular interest in the historical texts of Islamic law and theology.
