Indragiri Hulu, Administrative regency in Riau, Indonesia
Indragiri Hulu is a regency in Riau province on Sumatra island, covering 8,198 square kilometers and divided into fourteen administrative districts. Rengat serves as the administrative center of this region.
The territory underwent administrative restructuring in October 1999, which led to the creation of a separate regency called Kuantan Singingi. This division reshaped the administrative structure of the region significantly.
The indigenous Talang Mamak people have settled across several districts and shape daily life with their traditional ways of living. When walking through the villages, you can still see their craftsmanship and how they work with the forest and its resources.
The region is primarily known for its large-scale agricultural operations, with significant land dedicated to rubber and palm oil cultivation. Visitors should know that the best time to travel to this region is during drier months, and infrastructure in more rural areas is more basic.
The area has a population density of around 57 people per square kilometer, making it relatively sparsely populated. This low density means that much of the landscape remains forest and natural terrain that shapes the character of the region.
