Casuarina Prison, maximum-security prison in Western Australia
Casuarina Prison is a maximum-security facility for male inmates located about 35 kilometers south of Perth in Western Australia. It houses both sentenced prisoners and those awaiting trial, with specialized units including a hospital, crisis care center, and rehabilitation programs.
The facility opened in 1991, replacing the historic Fremantle Prison from colonial times. A Christmas Day riot in 1998 prompted increased security measures and a series of expansions that significantly grew capacity through 2021, including new housing units and a dedicated youth section established in 2022.
Visits require advance appointment booking and are only possible during designated business hours, with a maximum of three adults per visit. The facility is accessible by public transport, with bus services from Kwinana Station available at scheduled times.
The facility was the site of a prison riot on Christmas Day 1998, which became a turning point for security measures. It also served as a filming location for the movie Son of a Gun and was featured in the National Geographic documentary Australia's Hardest Prison.
