P&O Hotel

The P&O Hotel is a two-story brick and stone building with a recessed colonnade entrance and a balustraded arcade on the upper level. The structure now serves as the home of Notre Dame University's School of Nursing and Midwifery.

The building was constructed in 1903 for the Australian Union Steamship Navigation Company and changed hands in 1914 when P&O took over operations. This shift reflected broader changes in Australia's shipping industry during that period.

The building displays classical architectural features of the Federation era with horizontal shadow lines and a triangular pediment showing the initials AUSNC. These design elements remain visible today and reflect the role of the original maritime company.

The building is located on Phillimore Street in Fremantle and forms part of the university campus with some areas accessible to the public. It has been extensively renovated while maintaining its original external appearance.

The building retains its original verandahs and maritime design elements that recall its shipping industry past. This connection to seafaring heritage remains clearly visible in the structure and its details.
