The workshops were established in 1901 to support timber operations across Western Australia and operated as a major industrial center for over seven decades. During both World Wars, production shifted to manufacturing armaments, reflecting the site's strategic importance to Australia's defense efforts.

The workshops preserve early 1900s engineering craftsmanship, particularly visible in the foundry where wooden patterns for casting remain on display. You can observe how skilled trades were central to supporting the region's timber industry.

The site is accessed through guided tours that walk visitors through steam technology, maintenance procedures, and manufacturing methods used historically. Comfortable footwear is advisable as you will move between multiple buildings and outdoor areas.

The foundry holds an unusually large collection of wooden casting patterns that reveal how traditional sand-casting techniques were integrated with industrial-scale machinery.
