Fremantle Traffic Bridge, Road bridge in Fremantle, Australia
The Fremantle Traffic Bridge is a road bridge crossing the Swan River to link North Fremantle and Fremantle with four traffic lanes. The structure spans approximately 219 meters across the water.
The current bridge replaced an earlier 1866 structure when it opened in December 1939. It was built largely from timber, which meant it was always expected to have a limited lifespan.
The bridge serves as the main northern entry point to the city, marking where the river separates the two areas it connects. People use it daily as the primary route between these neighborhoods, making it a vital part of how the community moves around.
A new bridge is being built west of the existing structure while traffic continues to flow over the current one. Completion is planned for 2026, after which the older bridge may be repurposed.
After the new bridge is built, the current structure may be converted into a public space with markets, seating areas, and viewing platforms. This would transform it from a traffic route into a gathering place for the community.
