Claremont Teachers College, Heritage teaching institution in Claremont, Australia
Claremont Teachers College is a former teacher training institution located between Goldsworthy, Princess, and Bay Roads in Perth, featuring limestone walls and a square crenellated tower. The site now functions as part of the University of Western Australia's campus, housing the Confucius Institute and University Press among other facilities.
The institution was founded in 1902 as Western Australia's first post-secondary teaching facility and trained educators for nearly eighty years. Its transformation into a College of Advanced Education in 1981 marked the end of its role as a dedicated teacher training college.
The college served as a training ground for educators who would lead schools across the region for generations. Its presence in the neighborhood reflects the historical importance of teacher preparation in the state's development.
The grounds are now part of a university campus and open for visitors to explore, with the architectural features visible from outside the buildings. The location is easily accessible by car or public transport and sits in a quiet residential area with adequate parking nearby.
The college was the sole place to obtain formal teacher training in the entire state until the 1950s brought new competitors to the field. When newer institutions opened their doors, it marked the end of a monopoly that had shaped educational leadership for half a century.
