Wellington Weir, Water management infrastructure in Western Australia
Wellington Weir is a proposed dam structure on the Murray River in South Australia. The installation was designed to manage water levels upstream and redirect flow patterns into Lake Alexandrina.
The project began in 2006 following an agreement between South Australian Premier Mike Rann and Prime Minister John Howard. Plans were abandoned in 2009 after concerns emerged about environmental damage to acid sulfate soils around the lakes.
The Ngarrindjeri people conducted the Murrundi Ruwe Pangari Ringbalin ceremony near the weir site in April 2010.
The location sits within the Murray River system and is accessed via regional routes in South Australia. The site remains undeveloped as the project was not completed, so visitors should prepare for a natural riverside setting.
The proposal was part of broader efforts to manage the Murray River system and connected waterways. Its cancellation highlighted the tension between water management needs and environmental protection in the region.
