New Norcia, Benedictine monastic town in Western Australia, Australia
New Norcia is a Benedictine monastic town located near the Moore River, roughly 130 kilometers north of Perth. The settlement features Spanish-influenced religious architecture with churches, monastery buildings, schools, and traditional stone structures spread across its grounds.
Two Spanish Benedictine monks founded this monastic settlement in 1848 to build a self-sufficient community. The founders worked closely with the Yued Aboriginal people, which shaped this place from the start.
The museum and art gallery display Christian artwork and Aboriginal objects in historic school buildings. These collections reflect the meeting of European and local traditions that shaped this place.
The town is easily accessible via the Great Northern Highway from Perth and offers guided tours through the buildings and grounds. Visitors should allow time for a full walk around and wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the site on foot is the best way to experience it.
Just south of this monastic site sits one of the European Space Agency's ground stations, quietly operating among the heritage buildings. This modern scientific facility works alongside the religious community without changing the appearance of the place.
