Geraldton

Geraldton is a coastal city in Western Australia that stretches along the Indian Ocean shoreline. The city serves as the main center for the Mid West region and links several smaller communities along the coast and inland.

European sailors reached the area in the 17th century, but a permanent settlement emerged only in the 1850s. The colony grew with the construction of port facilities that enabled the export of wool and later minerals.

The name comes from Governor Charles Fitzgerald, whose middle name the settlers adopted. The town has carried this name since 1850, when British officials decided on the official founding.

The weather stays dry and sunny throughout the year, with summers that can become hot. Water and sun protection should be brought along for any outdoor activities.

The coastal waters offer strong winds that draw kitesurfers from across the country. Competitions take place regularly when conditions are favorable and participants can ride the windy waves.
