Helena and Aurora Ranges National Park, Nature reserve in Goldfields-Esperance region, Australia
Helena and Aurora Ranges National Park is a large protected area within the Great Western Woodlands of Western Australia, featuring diverse vegetation and rock formations. The landscape encompasses forested regions, open spaces, and rocky outcrops that together create a complex natural environment.
The area received protected status in 2017 when the Environmental Protection Authority designated it to prevent iron ore mining operations. This decision followed decades of mining activity in the region and marked a turning point toward safeguarding the landscape.
The Kaprun people, speakers of the Kalaamaya language, hold deep connections to this land through sacred locations that dot the park and remain central to their traditions. Visitors walking through the park are moving through a landscape layered with spiritual meaning for the traditional owners.
The cooler months offer the best conditions for visiting, as temperatures are more moderate and walking is more comfortable. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and a map, since the terrain is remote and covers a wide area.
The park holds about 3000 flowering plant species, representing roughly one fifth of all known flowering plants in Australia. This exceptional concentration of plant diversity is a botanical treasure that visitors often pass through without fully realizing.
