Bungle Bungle Range, Mountain range in Kimberley region, Western Australia.
Bungle Bungle Range is a mountain range in Kimberley with striking sandstone formations striped in orange and grey across their surfaces. The distinctive dome shapes reach heights up to 473 meters and dominate the landscape.
These sandstone formations took shape about 350 million years ago during the Devonian period when the entire region lay beneath an ancient sea. The layered rocks record how the land changed over vast stretches of time.
The Gija and Jaru peoples have lived here for around 20,000 years and continue to practice ceremonies and share stories connected to this land. Their presence shapes how the place is understood and valued today.
Visitors need four-wheel-drive vehicles to travel the unsealed roads leading to the range, as access is challenging in places. Visit between April and October for the most comfortable conditions.
Deep within the range sits a circular depression about 7 kilometers across, created by an ancient meteorite impact. This site, called Piccaninny Crater, reveals how space rocks shaped the landscape.
