Ngurah Rai International Airport, International airport in Kuta, Indonesia.
Ngurah Rai International Airport is an international airport in Tuban, Bali, handling both domestic and overseas connections with two separate terminal buildings. The site sits directly on the coast and features a main runway plus modern processing facilities for millions of passengers each year.
The site served from the early thirties onward as a basic airstrip with a grass runway and little infrastructure. During World War II, Japanese occupation forces expanded the facilities considerably and turned them into a military base.
The passenger areas are decorated with carved wooden panels and stone statues that recall Balinese temple structures and offer a first impression of island architecture upon arrival. Many travelers see the terminals as an introduction to the local building tradition found throughout Bali.
Taxis and ride services are available at the arrival area of both terminals, and a toll expressway leads directly into the island interior and toward Denpasar. Travelers with heavy luggage will find baggage carts at several points in the arrival area and should plan for the distance between processing halls and the exit.
Every year in spring the entire airport site remains closed for one full day when Nyepi is observed and absolute silence must prevail across Bali. All flights are canceled, no aircraft take off or land, and ground vehicles also stand still.
