Karawang

Karawang is an administrative regency in West Java province on the island of Java in Indonesia. The territory extends from coastal plains in the north to hills in the south, with the highest point located on Mount Sanggabuana.

The region was shaped as an administrative unit during Dutch colonial rule and declared a regency in 1947. During the independence war, heavy fighting took place here between Indonesian fighters and Dutch colonial forces.

The population of over 2.5 million residents in Karawang maintains strong Sundanese traditions, with 98 percent practicing Islam and celebrating regional ceremonies.

The area includes several large industrial zones that can be reached via major roads from Jakarta and other surrounding cities. The region serves both as an industrial and agricultural center with different areas for different activities.

The region is now one of the largest car production sites in Southeast Asia while also containing expansive rice fields. Many visitors expect a purely rural landscape and are surprised by the concentration of modern factories alongside traditional farming.
