Tasikmalaya

Tasikmalaya is a city in the mountainous region of West Java, sitting at 351 meters above sea level, with Mount Galunggung rising to 2,168 meters as the tallest peak nearby. It spreads between hills and valleys, connecting urban districts with countryside around them.

The area traces back to the Kingdom of Galunggung, established on August 21, 1111, under Queen Batari Hyang. Over the centuries, the region grew into a trade center and crossroads linking coastal towns with the highlands.

The city hosts more than 800 traditional Islamic boarding schools called pesantren, making it a major center for religious education in West Java. Many of these institutions blend into daily life, shaping the rhythm and character of local streets.

Wiriadinata Airport has served both military and civilian flights since 2017, handling regional aircraft such as the ATR 72-600. The city lies between larger centers and works well as a stopover for travelers exploring the highlands.

Archaeological work in 2020 near the Parit Galunggung river uncovered ancient deity idols, including statues of Ganesha. These finds suggest a long religious and cultural continuity in the area.
