Malahayu Reservoir, reservoir in Indonesia
Malahayu Reservoir is a water storage area in Central Java. It stretches across a wide surface with surrounding terrain that changes depending on the season and water levels.
The Dutch colonial government built the dam between December 1933 and May 1937, starting with a helper dam downstream of the main one; when river water overtopped it and swept away heavy equipment, the helper dam was raised with sandbags so work could finish. The reservoir was inaugurated on 19 May 1938 with a capacity of 69,000,000 m³, irrigating about 18,456 hectares. By a 1974 measurement, sedimentation had cut capacity to 47,000,000 m³.
The area can be explored on foot, ideally in the early morning or late afternoon. The paths around the reservoir are often unpaved, so sturdy footwear and attention to the terrain are recommended.
