Brawijaya University, Public university in Lowokwaru, Malang, Indonesia
Brawijaya University is a state institution in Lowokwaru, East Java, with 18 faculties spread over 60 hectares (148 acres), serving around 55,000 students in programs ranging from vocational training to doctoral studies. The campus features lecture halls, sports facilities, several libraries, and research centers distributed across the wide grounds.
The institution was founded in 1963 as a branch of a university from Makassar, starting with faculties for law and economics. Four years later it became an independent state institution and received its current name.
The name comes from the ruling title of the Majapahit Empire, established by presidential decree in 1961. This link to the Javanese kingdom that flourished from the 13th to 15th century still shapes how the institution sees itself today.
The sprawling campus includes conference rooms in the Widyaloka building, a large event hall, and dedicated service facilities for people with disabilities. Visitors exploring the grounds should expect long walks between different faculty buildings.
The institution ranks fifth nationwide and recently reached 225th place in a regional university assessment. This standing makes it one of the most attended higher education sites on Java outside the capital.
